Rethinking Retirement

by Keith J. Weber

Contrary to popular belief, the Baby Boomers are not a single generation. Typically described as the 76 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964, the formative experiences of first half boomers were very different than those of second half boomers. Whereas first-half boomers witnessed JFK's assassination and experienced Woodstock and the Vietnam War firsthand, second-half boomers were just children at the time. Their perceptions of the world were shaped by Watergate, disco, and the Iran hostage crisis. By the time the 1980's rolled around, first-half boomers were well into the accumulation phase of their lives (remember Michael Douglas's portrayal of Gordon "Greed is Good" Gekko from the 1987 movie Wall Street?) while second-half boomers were just then graduating from college and beginning their careers.
